|Statements by the President of the Republic on his visit to Qatar
The aim set during our visit to Qatar has been achieved at the level of mutual understanding, and the second aim that is pending is to see the materialization of the goals we seek, in other words, to succeed in having direct investments from abroad, the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, said today.
In his remarks to the Cypriot media accompanying him on his official visit to Qatar, the President of the Republic said: “Evaluating my visit to Qatar, I must say that I consider it as one of the most important but also very productive visits with regard to the talks both with the Emir of the State of Qatar, but also the Prime Minister, the Ministers and the Business Forum.
At the same time, also important were the contacts with well-known important investment funds, which showed interest, provided of course that the possible investments will be to the benefit of both sides.
We must keep our feet on the ground so as not to create impressions other than those that are mandated and necessary. What matters is the determination to establish an even better connection between Cyprus and Qatar both at the political and at the business activities level.
On the instructions of the Emir, within the next few weeks, delegations from the various funds or even on behalf of the Emir himself, will visit Cyprus with regard to possible interesting projects for investment. This is one important element. If we manage to be persuasive, then we will benefit.
I would like to say that during my various meetings and at the meeting with the Emir, the Prime Minister and others, I have established that what distinguishes the Qatari people is directness and not beating around the bush. No one should underestimate the Government or the business people or any official of the State of Qatar. They are highly educated people with great perspicacity, who know what they want and what they must do. It is therefore necessary, on the part of our side, to demonstrate absolute seriousness.
A second element that I consider as a success, is the interest they have in Cypriot construction and other companies to undertake projects in Qatar.
We have signed three Memoranda of Understanding and one Agreement, in addition to those that have already been signed between the two states until now.
I leave Qatar absolutely satisfied with this visit. I wish that with the large delegation comprised of social partners and businesspeople who accompanied me during this visit and participated in a high level business forum today, it will be possible to create the prospects for cooperation between businesspeople either for investments in Cyprus from Qatar or for the undertaking of projects in Qatar on the part of Cyprus.
In general, the aim set has been achieved at the level of mutual understanding, and the second aim that is pending is to see the materialization of the goals we seek, in other words, to succeed in having direct investments from abroad.
They have shown interest in various sectors of the economy and I believe we are in a position to respond to their interests.”
