Message from the Head of the Asylum Service

Dear visitors,

The Asylum Service welcomes you to its website.

Through the Website, the visitor can be informed about the purpose and work of the Asylum Service.

The Asylum Service was established in February 2004 based on an amendment to the Refugee Law of 2000, replacing the Refugee Authority.
In general, asylum procedures in Cyprus are in a continuous process of alignment with the constantly evolving European acquis, aiming on the one hand to provide protection to those who face fear of persecution in their countries of origin and on the other hand, adopting fast and effective procedures to deal with applications in a timely, fair and effective manner and not to allow abuse of the system. The Asylum Service receives, examines and judges at first instance, based on the legislation and the international obligations of the country, the applications for international protection that are submitted while it cooperates with international organizations and the European Union in the areas of its activity.

So, I welcome you again to the Website of the Asylum Service, hoping that, through this, you will have perfect and valid information for the wide range of responsibilities of the Service. Our effort will be the enrichment of the Website with a continuous flow of useful information to serve all interested parties.

Head of Asylum Service,
Andreas Georgiades
