Minister of Interior

Socrates Hasikos was born in Nicosia on April 12, 1956. He grew up in the occupied today by the Turkish troops village Dikomo of the Kyrenia District. He has studied Law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

At the May 19, 1991 elections he was elected Member of the House of Representatives for the Kyrenia District with the Democratic Rally and was reelected as Member at the May 26, 1996 elections, an office in which he served until 1999, when he was appointed Minister of Defence until February 2003. He was reelected MP at the elections of May 21, 2006.

He served as deputy Parliamentary Spokesman of the Democratic Rally, rotating Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Contacts between the Government, the House of Representatives and the Cyprus Civil Servants Trade Union as well as deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Development Plans and Public Expenditure Control. He also served as member of the Parliamentary Committees on Defence Affairs and Legal Affairs.

From 1999 to 2003, during the term of Glafkos Clerides, he served as Minister of Defence of the Republic.

He also served as Vice-President of the Democratic Rally. At present, he is a member of the Executive Bureau of the party.

From 2003 until February 2013 he has been the President of the Board of Directors of AlfaMediaGroup.

He is married to Elli Koulermou and they have two sons and a daughter.

Mr Hasikos has assumed his duties as Minister of Interior on 1st March 2013.
