Overview EU citizens and their family members wishing to remain in the Republic for longer than 3 months must obtain a residence permit within 4 months of their arrival date. The card issued to EU citizens is called a ‘residence card’ (form MEU1) and it is issued by the appropriate authority subject to payment of a fee of EUR 20 and submission of the necessary documents. The card issued to family members of EU citizens is called a ‘residence card for family members of EU citizens who are not EU nationals’ (form MEU2) and it is issued subject to payment of a fee of EUR 20 within 6 months of the date of receipt of the application. EU citizens and their family members who have resided legally in the Republic for 5 consecutive years automatically acquire the right of permanent residence, provided they meet certain requirements. A permanent residence card is issued as quickly as possible, subject to payment of a fee of EUR 20.
