29/04/2009 |
Cyprus has the highest share of tertiary education graduates in the age group 25-34 according to data released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, included in a report “The Bologna Process in Higher Education in Europe – Key indicators on the social dimension and mobility” issued in the framework of the Bologna Ministerial Conference in Belgium on 28-29 April.
According to Eurostat data, in 2007 47% of Cypriots aged between 25 and 34 were higher education graduates. The EU average was 29,9% and in Greece that percentage was 27,1%. The second EU member state after Cyprus with the most graduates in the same age group was Ireland with 43%. The lowest shares of tertiary education graduates were found in the Czech Republic (16%), Romania (17%) and Slovakia (18%).
The proportion of tertiary education graduates in the EU27 has increased more for women that for men through the generations, Eurostat said. In the youngest age group (25-34), according to the data for 2007, a higher proportion of women than men had completed tertiary education (26% for men and 34% for women). For Cyprus in particular that percentage was 41,7% and 52,3% respectively.
Cyprus also came first in the number of students enrolled in tertiary education in a European country other than their country of origin. Specifically, in 2006 78,7% of Cypriots were studying in a European country other than Cyprus.
Regarding the proportion of foreign students in 2006, the highest share was recorded in the United Kingdom (18,3%), Austria (15,6%) and France (14,6%). Cyprus’ share of foreign students was 7,8% of the entire number of students studying in that country.
The Bologna Process is the process of creating the European Higher Education Area by 2010 and of promoting the European system of higher education worldwide. The Bologna Process is based on cooperation between ministries, higher education institutions, students and staff from 46 countries, with the participation of international organisations.
