|The Government Spokesman is responsible for expressing the Government policy on the Cyprus problem as well as on issues of internal government policy. He is essentially entrusted with the task of interpreting and promoting the policy of the government and coordinating the enlightenment activities of the Press and Information Office.|
In the framework of his duties, the Government Spokesman briefs the political editors of the mass media. Τhe statements of the Spokesman and his answers to press questions are transcribed and then inserted in the webpage of the Press and Information Office. They are also translated into English and are available on line.
In addition, the Government Spokesman briefs the foreign press correspondents permanently based in Cyprus periodically and depending on the developments in the Cyprus problem. He also briefs foreign journalists who visit Cyprus.
From 1965 until 1983, the Director of the Press and Information Office also held the post of the Government Spokesman. In 1983 the two posts were separated. The Director of the PIO is a public service position, while the Government Spokesman is a political post, equal in rank to the position of Minister. The Spokesman is directly appointed by the President of the Republic.
At present, the post of the Government Spokesman is held by Mr Nikos Christodoulides, who succeeded Mr Christos Stylianides. Mr Christodoulides officially assumed his duties on Monday 14 April 2014.
