The President of the Republic received Mr A. Downer

The President of the Republic received Mr A. DownerThe President of the Republic, Mr Demetris Christofias, received today, at the Presidential Palace, the United Nations Special Adviser on Cyprus, Mr Alexander Downer. After the meeting Mr Downer told the press that he had “a very good meeting with Mr Christofias,” adding that “we are obviously, in the UN, looking forward to the leaders’ meeting on Friday, and importantly the two full-day meetings that are going to take place next week. It’s going to be an interesting period when we discuss the property question.” Asked whether he expects the two leaders to submit proposals on the property issue Mr Downer said that “that is a matter for the leaders and for them to talk about how they are going to handle the talks. What we would say publicly about all of these, is that we very much want the two sides to continue to work and move forward on the property question. If they can, as we sometimes put it, ‘break the back’ of the property issue and find some really important convergences, then this is going to be a very important step forward in the Cyprus negotiations. We hope what happens over the next ten days or so, will make a contribution to that.” He added that “how they will in detail handle it, that is a matter for them to talk about publicly, I don’t think it would be discreet for us to do that.” - 01.09.2010

Press Release: Excavations at Kissonerga-Skalia 2010

The Ministry of Communications and Works, Department of Antiquities, announces the completion of the latest season of excavations at the Early–Middle Bronze Age (c. 2300–1650 BC) settlement of Kissonerga-Skalia, which was carried out during July by a University of Manchester team under the direction of Dr Lindy Crewe. The team focused their efforts on revealing further Bronze Age architectural remains, partially exposed during the previous three seasons, in order to address questions of how people lived during the Bronze Age in Kissonerga; how long the site was occupied for; and how local populations interacted with other communities on the island. Kissonerga-Skalia is the first site of this period to be excavated in the southwest of the island and the only known site located by the coast, in contrast to the more usual inland Early–Middle Bronze Age settlement patterns. - 01.09.2010

Research and development activity in Cyprus in 2008

On the basis of the results of the ad hoc survey carried out by the Statistical Service for the collection of data on scientific research and experimental development (R & D), total R & D expenditure in Cyprus in 2008 is estimated at €73,4 mn which corresponds to 0,43% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), compared to €70,1 mn or 0,44% of the GDP in 2007 and €61,4 mn or 0,43% in 2006. For example, the share of R & D expenditure to the GDP of the European Union member states stands at 1,9% on average (ranging from 0,43% in Cyprus, 0,47% in the Slovak Republic and 0,49% in Bulgaria to 3,73% in Finland and 3,75% in Sweden). - 26.08.2010
