1. Overview
Persons wishing to enter into a civil marriage must be at least 18 years of age. Persons who are 16 years of age may be allowed to enter into a civil marriage but must submit written consent from their parents or guardians.
Persons wishing to enter into a civil marriage must not be impeded from doing so by the provisions of the relevant law on kinship (e.g. they must not be related by blood up to the fifth degree or by marriage up to the third degree).
Civil divorce becomes absolute on expiry of a period of 42 days from the date on which the decree nisi was granted, as it can be appealed within 42 days. On expiry of the period of 42 days, the court stamps the decree nisi, thereby confirming that it has not been appealed against.
