1. Overview
Naturalisation is the process by which a foreign national who is not of Cypriot origin can acquire Cypriot citizenship.

2. Prerequisites
Applicants must be adults, of full capacity and must reside legally in the Republic. Depending on their category of residence, applicants must have completed 5 or 7 years of lawful stay in the Republic, of which the final year must be of continuous stay.
More specifically, visitors, self-employed persons, athletes, coaches, sports technicians, housekeepers, nurses, persons employed by Cypriot citizens or foreign employers or offshore companies who reside in the Republic for the exclusive purpose of employment, including their spouses and dependants, must complete 7 years of lawful stay in the Republic, whereas other categories applicants must complete 5 years.
Applicants must be persons of good character, and have the intention, provided they are granted a certificate of naturalisation, to remain in the Republic.

Where the naturalisation application is approved, the CRMD shall issue a ‘Certificate of Naturalisation’.
